Hum Sab Mehrauli hain – Neighbourhood Museum Back

The ICH Division, along with the Delhi Chapter of INTACH and Ambedkar University, Delhi, undertook a project on creating a Neighborhood Museum with provision of cultural activities in near future at the designated place of museum.   Mehrauli as a place / study area was chosen because of its historicity and INTACH Delhi Chapter’s involvement in the conservation of built heritage in this area.  INTACH has also been conducting several cultural and outreach activities here for many years.

Acknowledging this fact both the institutions have agreed to work jointly to create a temporary local museum at the site, with the aim of documenting the ‘lived every day’ using memory, local history and the communication arts to provoke multiple narratives of a shared public setting, designed to make layers of meaning visible. The plan to create a future Delhi City Museum is also being discussed, for which a proposal is being prepared.

“Hum Sab Mehrauli” is an open exhibition that displays Mehrauli’s past through people’s memories of the neighbourhood.

Given Mehrauli’s continuous history, it is fallacious to split it into its past, a medieval Mehrauli, and its present, Mehrauli as it is today. Like any other neighbourhood, Mehrauli’s history needs to be studied within this continuity in the way spaces and structures have been negotiated with by the residents here. Therefore, this projects attempts to exhibit some of the collected narratives of residents from different parts of the settlement. Given the vastness of this place, we have tried to present a small variety of memories and experiences, always shifting and conflicting.

The exhibition is open all day to everyone, from 23 February till the first week of March, 2017, at the following address:-

Kalu Ram Complex:

Kalu Ram Complex, Desu Road, Nai Basti, Ward 1, Mehrauli, New Delhi, Delhi 110030
