Fourth Pupul Jayakar Memorial Lecture – ‘Cities and Political Power’ by Mr. Charles Correa Back
ICH organized the Fourth Pupul Jayakar Memorial Lecture 2012 on 18th April. The lecture was delivered by Mr. Charles Correa on “Cities and Political Power”. Mr. Correa is an architect, planner, activist and theoretician. He has received the highest honours of his profession, including the gold medal of the RIBA, the gold medal of the UIA (international Union of Architects), the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, and the Praemium Imperiale of Japan. In his lecture, Mr. Correa highlighted how in the modern city, by contrast, urban spaces become battlegrounds, and the image of a city becomes obscured because of architectural interventions for short term gains. He also emphasised the need for a national policy which takes a holistic overview, with a need for a political will, which aims to create liveable cities with amenities to improve the quality of life of city dwellers.
