Forgotten Voices of the Japan Laan: The Battle of Imphal and the Second World War in Manipur

This seminal text by Yaiphaba Meetei Kangjam is a reservoir of oral histories of the Manipur people during the Japan Laan or Japanese War. It is a rich collection of interviews of survivors of the Second World War from one of India’s most remote states, each of whom gives a unique account of what they witnessed at a tumultuous time. Focusing on the humane and intangible cultural aspect of the war, it gives a rare and oft-overlooked perspective of historical events.
