Art Pitara Winter series Back

The division of Intangible Cultural Heritage & Happy Hands Foundation jointly organized a series of month long workshops, titled “Art Pitara” from 15th Decemeber 2015 – 14th January 2015 at Multipurpose Hall and the open-air aangan area of INTACH.

The first workshop began with the famous mud and mirror work of Gujarat called Lippan Kaam. The participants made their own pieces of lippan kaam under the guidance of Nama Bai and Sumar Bhura who came to conduct the workshop from Kutch, Gujarat.

This was followed by the Kalamkari painting workshop which was conducted by K. Shivaprasad Reddy from Andhra Pradesh. A special ‘kalam’ or pen was used with natural colours. The intricacies of the art and its various processes were explained and demonstrated by the master artist for the participants.

The third workshop was that of the Pattachitra palm leaf art of Orissa. Apindra Swain, the artist who has been practising pattachitra for over 30 years guided the participants at every step to create their own versions of pattachitra, that they took back home with them.

After the Pattachitra workshop that ended in December 2014, the New Year was welcomed with the Phad painting workshop that was conducted by Mukul Joshi who came from Rajasthan. The colour preparations, stories involved, the little details were narrated and explained by the artist who later supervised the separate works of each participant.

The last workshop for the winter series was a Seraikella Chhau dance workshop which was conducted by two students of Guru Shashadhar Acharya ji and Sapan Acharya ji. During the week long workshop, the participants were given a brief introduction of the dance form and were taught the basic techniques involved in the dance form. The masks, swords and shields used in the dance were also displayed and used during the workshop.

The response for the winter series was great and left the participants wanting more.
